Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Sec. Eduardo Año said on Tuesday, March 10, that Metro Manila might be put under total lockdown when it reaches Code Red Sublevel 2. With this statement, two important questions have been raised.
First, what really is Code Red Sublevel 2? And what will happen if Metro Manila is put under total lockdown?
According to the Department of Health (DOH), Code Red Sublevel 2 is when there’s already confirmed community transmission. “My ebidensiya ng community transmission at patuloy na pagtaas at paglaganap ng mga kaso na higit pa sa kakayanan ng gobyerno na tugunan (There’s evidence of community transmission and continuous spread of the disease beyond the capability of the government to control),” DOH explains in a Facebook post.
When it comes to total lockdown, Sec. Año said that it entails suspension of classes and work. “Pagka-dumating tayo sa Sublevel 2 ng Code Red, ito ‘yung confirmed na ‘yung tinatawag natin na community transmission, ‘dun tayo pwede mag-lockdown, mag-stop na ng [classes], mag-suspend ng work (When we reached Code Red Sublevel 2, then we will imposed lockdown, we will suspend classes and work),” he says.
Meanwhile, based on Albay Representative Joey Salceda‘s recommendation, total lockdown of Metro Manila includes suspension of public transport and cancellation of domestic flights. “The lockdown of NCR should not be off the table if needed to slow down the transmission ofCOVID-19,” he says. “In NCR, there should be work stoppage for at least one week, no bus trips, no domestic flights, closing [of South Luzon and North Luzon expressways] and railways. All exceptions to the temporary entry ban to NCR would be food, medicines, and health professionals.” …From -
